Abstract

The aims of this report were to examine prevalence and severity of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in a general adult population in a Western Norwegian community in 1996/97. From a random sample of 3181 people 26/82 years old, 2358 (74%) participated in a spirometry survey in 1996/97. The major causes for non-participation were living outside Hordaland and refusing to participate. Spirometry was performed according to ATS criteria and measurements prior to inhaling adrenergic beta2-agonist were used in the present analysis. The overall prevalence of COPD was 9.5% (8.3-10.6). The percentage distribution of COPD by severity were 31% stage 1, 67% stage 2 (53% stage 2A and 14% stage 2B) and 2% stage 3. The prevalence (95% CI) was 2.6 (1.9-3.6) times higher in men than in women. Adjusted odds ratios for ex-smokers and smokers relative to never smokers were 1.7 (1.2-2.6) and 3.4 (2.3-5.0), respectively. 50% of 42 current smokers above 70 years had COPD. The prevalence of COPD by age was 6.3 (4.2-9.3) and 13.4 (8.1-22.2) times higher among those aged 60-74 and 75-82, respectively, compared with those aged 26-44 years. GOLD defined COPD is a heavy burden in the Norwegian population, strongly predicted by ageing and smoking.
