Abstract
Background and Aim
Recently a population-based study revealed that COPD is a far more common disease in Japan than previously reported, in concert with the growing evidence indicating that the number of patients with COPD is underestimated in general population around the world. The diagnosis of COPD can be missed even in hospitalized patients. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of COPD in hospitalized patients.
Subjects
We evaluated clinical data and pulmonary function test (PFT) of 1496 patients aged>=40 years(male: 999, female 497, mean age 64 year), who underwent surgery (except lung and throat disease) in Kurume University Hospital between January and December, 2000.
Method
The results of PFT and clinical record including medical and smoking histories, chest X-ray or chest CT, if any, were reviewed. After excluding bronchial asthma based on medical record, subjects with an FEV1.0/FVC[lte]70% were given a possible diagnosis of COPD.
Result
The prevalence of possible COPD was 36%. Only 6% of those patients had been diagnosed as having obstructive lung diseases.
Conclusion
COPD is underdiagnosed even in hospitalized patients. Further attention is needed to raise awareness of COPD.
