Abstract

There is no published information on the prevalence of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease in Greece. The aim of this study was to determine recent prevalence and trends of COPD amongst adults in the Greece. The study involved 635 randomly identified adults (369 males, 266 females) aged over 35 yrs. smokers at least 100 cigarettes per life-time in a population-based, multi-regional cross-sectional descriptive design. The selected individuals were reflected the urban/rural population distribution in Greece, while within each study region, individuals were selected to reflect the age group and gender of the community setting. Twenty-five pulmonologists members of the COPD group of the Hellenic Thoracic Society performed the study. The diagnosis of COPD was defined according to ERS statement (Eur Respir J 1995; 8:1398-420) and classified as mild, moderate and severe. The overall prevalence was 6.9%. The gender-standardized COPD prevalence was 9.2 for males and 3.8% for females. The COPD prevalence by community setting was: Athens 7.6%, other urban 4.8%, semi-urban 5.2%, and rural 9.2%. In both men and women an increase of the COPD prevalence reflecting the increase of the age group was observed.
