Abstract We have previously reported a positive association between alcohol consumption and the prevalence of allergic sensitisation in a population based cross-sectional study of 15-69-year-olds (n=1112) (Linneberg et al, Clin Exp Allergy 2001; 31: 1409-1417). In a follow-up of the same population we investigated the association between alcohol consumption and the development (incidence) of IgE sensitisation to inhalant allergens. Thus, skin prick test (SPT) positivity and specific IgE positivity to inhalant allergens were assessed in 734 subjects (participation rate 69.0%) on two occasions 8 years apart. Measurement of total IgE was performed at baseline. We found a non-significant positive association between alcohol consumption and the development of SPT positivity (P=0.09). In non-atopic subjects there was a significant positive association between alcohol consumption and serum levels of total IgE (P=0.001). In conclusion, these data indicate a possible role of alcohol consumption in the development of IgE sensitisation. However, this association needs to be confirmed in other populations.
