Abstract The Prospective study on the Influence of Perinatal factors on the Occurence of asthma and allergies (PIPO) is a cohort of women recruited from the general population in the Antwerp area at 5 months pregnancy. Smoking behaviour, atopic and asthmatic symptoms were obtained by questionnaire. This analysis was performed among 574 primparous women included in the study. Prevalence of smoking in various subgroups was compared with subjects without atopic symptoms. Each subgroup consisted of women with respectively asthma, allergic rhinitis, eczema or food allergy only and women with one or more of these symptoms.
Smoking before and/or during pregnancy Non smoking Odds Ratio N % N % Non atopic 107 32.1 226 67.9 1.0 Asthma 9 75.0 3 25.0 6.3*(1.7-23.8) Allergic rhinitis 23 34.8 43 65.2 1.1(0.6-2.0) Eczema 14 33.3 28 66.7 1.1(0.5-2.1) Food allergy 8 25.8 23 74.2 0.7(0.3-1.7) 1>=atopic symptoms 77 32.0 164 68.0 1.0(0.7-1.4)
The prevalence of smoking was significantly higher in asthmatic women compared to the reference group, whereas prevalence of smoking in the other subgroups was not significantly different. Among smokers 66% ceased smoking during pregnancy: which was independent from atopic status. Smoking behaviour was not related to atopic status, except for women with asthma.
