Abstract

Rationale: This study is part of an adult asthma population surveillance program which examines asthma management and morbidity annually. The aim was to assess asthma management practices in South Australia in 2001 and compare with previous data.
Methods: Personal interviews were conducted on 3037 adults (>15) in South Australia, selected randomly by Australian Bureau of Statistics census methodology between September to November 2001. The interviews collected demographic, asthma and other health information.
Results: A 71.3% response rate was achieved. The prevalence of current, self reported, doctor diagnosed asthma was 12.6%. Wakening weekly or more often with asthma was reported by 15.9% of people with asthma. Of the asthma population, 22.2% had a written action plan; 20.2% had a peak flow meter; 27.4% had a nebuliser;17.5% had lost time from usual activities; 21.2% described asthma s moderate/severe; 34.4% used daily preventer medication; and 4% had been admitted to a hospital.
Conclusion: In the adult population, asthma morbidity remains high and there is a fall in the ownership of written action plans.
