Abstract Introduction : 10-25% of about 16.000 athletes and national teams (A-NT) participante in the preparation and performance of Athens Olympics(AO) 2004, may encounter respiratory allergy (RA, asthma and rhinoconjuctivitis) triggered by exposure to aeroallergens(pollens and moulds). Aim of this presentation: is to provide information and to ensure safety for the allergic A-NT who will visit Greece from January to September 2004. Methods : Concentrations of the most frequently implicated pollens (Cupressus, Corylus, Parietaria, Platanus, Olea, Graminae, Chenopodium, Artemisia) and moulds (Alternaria, Cladosporium) will be announced by the mass media and internet. These data will derived from a large data-basis of 15-year aeroallergen record of the PDUTh. Aeroallergens collection has been performed by a Burkard volumetric trap in Thessaloniki (1987 till now). Data will also be provided from two other cities Kavala and Heraklion-Crete. Similar records have been performed since 1994 by the 2nd PDUA in Athens and wil also be available. Results are expressed as : A. Fluctuation of mean daily values of pollengrains or spores/m3 of the 15-year record and B. The time points of starting, peak and end of allergen circulation. Peak pollen circulation was observed between March and May(AO2004-preparation time). During real Olympic Games August-September an important circulation of Chenopodium, Artemisia, Alternaria, Cladosporium are observed. Aeroallergens appear in Athens about 10 days earlier than in Thessaloniki. Conclusions : The above data, will be available in www.univie.ac.at/ean and can help athletes with RA to safely achieve peak performance during AO2004.
