Abstract

Although it has been suggested that tuberculosis (TB) has negative effect on prevalence of allergic diseases, there are limited number of studies in the literature. Our aim was to investigate the total serum IgE levels in patients with active and inactive TB. In total, 44 patients presented TB (active= 21, inactive= 23) took part in this preliminary study. Twenty-one patients with active TB (pulmonary TB= 17 and extrapulmonary TB=4) were diagnosed either bacteriologically or histopathologically. The diagnosis of inactive TB was made by history, clinical, radiological and bacteriological findings. Age, sex and smoking status of all patients were noted. The presence of parasites and the level of total serum IgE were studied in all patients. The mean age of active and inactive groups were 37.9 ±] 15.9 years and 45.9 ±] 15.3 years, respectively. Smoking history was positive in 39.2 % and 44.8% of patients with active and inactive TB, respectively. Parasites were found to be negative in all patients. The level of total serum IgE in active group (108.50 ±] 54.49IU/mL) was significantly lower as compared to the total serum IgE level detected in patients with inactive TB (203.77 ±] 124.07 IU/mL; P<0.002). In conclusion, although our preliminary findings suggest that active tuberculosis may reduce the level of total serum IgE, we believe that further studies are required.
