Abstract

Background. The prevalence of allergy is different in geographic regions, nations, high and low-income population. There are opinions that BCG vaccination and infection by Mycobacterium tuberculosis can prevent manifestation of allergy (e.g., ChirakawaT et al, Science 1997, 275:77-79, Herz U et al, J Allergy Clin Immunol 1998, 102:867-874) Objectives. To determine possible link between positive tuberculin skin test and allergy. Methods. Six years old children were tested by intradermal injection of 2 TU PPD RT23 SSI (Copenhagen) and their immunological status (T lymphocytes, immunoglobulins) was evaluated. Parents of children answered questions concerning allergy in children and family. Data were captured and analyses were performed using Epi Info 6. Results. Fifty one children were enrolled into the study. Positive tuberculin skin tests (indurations >5mm) were observed in seventeen children, the mean size was 10,24mm.When compare the group with positive and negative tuberculin reactions, there were no differences in Ig A, M, G results and count of lymphocytes as well CD 8. Though there was the same percentage of allergic children in both groups, the allergic diseases were milder in the positive tuberculin test group and the level of Ig E was lower in this group (91,55 IU/ml versus 108,3 IU/ml, n.s.). The mean count of CD4 lymphocytes also was lower. (766,3 /mcl versus 854,7/mcl, n.s.). Conclusion. We failed to show strict inverse association between tuberculin skin responders and allergy, though some link could be seen.
