Abstract In Spain 30% of the visits to the paediatrician are related to respiratory processes, specially asthma and bronchitis. Both illnesses have increased substantially in the last years. Many studies show a relationship between the previous onset of bronchitis and the following situations of pediatric asthma. In our study we have quantified total serum IgE variations (ELISA or Immunonephelometry) in 653 infants from 3 to 36 months old investigating different situations: healthy (H, n=185), recurrent bronchitis (RB, n=138), wheezing bronchitis (WB, n=115) and allergic asthmatic patients (AA, n=215). The higher IgE mean values have corresponded to the AA group (71±] 11¿02 UI/ml) followed by WB (34¿1±] 61¿6), BR (9¿15±] 12¿3) and H (6¿7±] 6¿12 UI/ml). There are significant differences (p <0¢ 05) between H and AA and WB but not between H and BR. Something similar happens with the IgE percentage levels < 15 UI/ml for each group: H, 83%; BR 67%; WB, 62% and AA, 28% (p< 0¿05 of H with the rest of the groups).
Group n Age (months) IgE total (UI/ml) %<15 UI/ml p H 185 15'3 6'7±]6'12 83% - RB 138 11'6 9'15±]12'3 67% 0'19 WB 115 11'1 34'1±]61'6 62% 0'04 AA 215 16'7 71±]110'2 28% 0'02
These results suggest some allergic factor in WB and could help us to understand the following evolution from WB to allergic asthma and, finally, they support the use of anti-IgE drugs in the treatment of some infant allergic asthma.
