Abstract
Introduction: Chronic sinusitis in children is a common and troublesome disease for clinician and is frequently associated with allergy and asthma. Since there are insufficient data related to the pathogenesis of chronic sinusitis in children, an attempt was made to determine whether a correlation between allergy and the chronic sinusitis in children exists or not. Methods: Sixty seven children with chronic sinusitis diagnosed by clinical and radiology criteria were enrolled in the study. Medical records and family histories were reviewed. Serum samples were assayed for a complete blood differential count, immunogloblins, total IgE and specific IgE, as well as prick allergy tests. Case control analysis was performed to determine possible risk factors for chronic sinusitis. Results: The children with chronic sinusitis had a higher prevalence of allergic rhinitis (71%) and asthma (39%) than the subjects with acute sinusitis (p < 0.01). An eosinophil count > or = 450/uL, adenoid hypertrophy, specific IgE and positive prick tests to inhalatory allergens were associated with chronic sinusitis. Allergic rhinitis and asthma were also associated with chronic sinusitis in children (p < 0.05). Other factors such as daycare attendance, elder sibling or family history of atopy did not correlate with the occurrence of chronic sinusitis. Conclusions: Allergic rhinitis, asthma, specific IgE, positive prick allergy tests, eosinophilia, and adenoid hypertrophy were associated with chronic sinusitis in children, suggesting that allergy may contribute to the development of chronic sinusitis.
