Abstract

The aim of the study was to investigate the right ventricular diastolic function (RVDF) by 2-dimensional and Doppler echocardiography in highlanders (HL) with high altitude pulmonary hypertension (HAPH). Subjects - 36 HL with HAPH aged 21 to 68 yrs, residing at altitudes of 2900-3600m. According to echocardiographic evidence of right ventricular hypertrophy (RVH) [right ventricular dimension (RVD) >2.5cm and anterior wall thickness (RVAWT)>0,5cm] they were divided into 2 groups: 16 HL with high altitude cor pulmonale(HACP) and 20 HL without RVH (HAPH). 18 age matched apparently healthy HL without HAPH serve as control. All investigations were performed at altitude of 3000m. It was shown that in HL with HAPH alterations of RVDF are observed, most severe in presence of RVH.
Legend. *, **, *** - p<0.05, p<0.01, p<0.001 accordingly for comparison with control group; MPAP - mean pulmonary arterial pressure; E/A – peak E velocity to peak A velocity ratio; FAF - fraction of atrial filling.
