Abstract

The aim of the study was to estimate APACHE II and MPMo scores, as well as predicted death rates in patients with severe exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) at two consecutive admissions to Respiratory Intermediate Care Unit (RICU) with different outcomes of hospital treatment.
APACHE II score, predicted death rate by APACHE II score and predicted death rate by MPMo score were calculated in 34 patients at two consecutive admissions. At the first admission the patients had positive outcome, and all of them died at the consecutive hospitalization. Highly significant differences (p±]0.0001) in APACHE II scores (19±]4.5 ; 26±]7.8), in predicted death rates by APACHE II scores ( 27±]14% ; 45±]22%) and predicted death rates by MPMo scores ( 32±]23% ; 66±]28% ) were found between two admissions in RICU. It was concluded that APACHE II and MPMo scores are good predictors of outcome of patients with severe exacerbation of COPD.
