Abstract

The aim of the study was to compare predicted death rates by APACHE II and MPMo scores in patients with severe exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) admitted in Respiratory Intermediate Care Unit (RICU).
The study included 34 patients (12 female and 22 male). Predicted death rates by APACHE II score (Ra) and MPMo score (Rm) were calculated at two consecutive admissions to RICU; the first one with positive and the second one with lethal outcomes, respectively. Statistically significant difference (p±]0.001) was found between Ra ( 46±]22%; 95% confidence interval 38-53%) and Rm (66±]28%;95% confidence interval 56-76%) at the admission with lethal outcome. There was not found statistical significant difference between Ra (27±]14%; 95% confidence interval 22-32%) and Rm (32±]23%; 95% confidence interval 24-40%) at the admission with positive outcome. It was concluded that in patients with severe exacerbation of COPD, MPMo score was better predictor of lethal outcome than APACHE II score.
