Abstract Objective: to evaluate the effect of an asthma education program on the quality of life of patients with mild persistent asthma. Methods: the study was performed by 13 pulmonary physicians working in Sicily. We recruited on 8 non consecutive days all patients aged 18-50 years with newly diagnosed or with re-diagnosis of asthma, and in which asthma severity was judged mild persistent as defined by Global Initiative for Asthma Guidelines. Patients received education about asthma facts, allergen avoidance and environmental control measures, role of medications, written asthma management plan, exercise performance, skills for self-management, rescue action plan. Patients were assessed at 1, 3 and 6 months from the first visit. At each visit patient education was verified and boosted. Two questionnaires, the Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire (AQLQ) and the Health Status questionnaire (HS) were administered at the time of enrolment and at the end of the study. Results: we recruited 49 asthmatics (28 F, 21 M). The four domains of the AQLQ varied as follows (Mean ±] SE): symptoms from 53 ±] 8 to 62 ±] 7 (p<0.05); activity limitation from 46 ±] 4 to 59 ±] 6 (p<0.05); emotional status from 23 ±] 2 to 35 ±] 5 (p < 0.05) and environmental stimuli from 14±]2 to 17 ±] 4. The HS score fell from 3.5 ±] 0.3 to 2.4 ±] 0.2. Conclusions: the education program resulted in a significant improvement of the quality of life in this selected population of asthmatic patients.
