Abstract

Objective: To compare young asthmatics (15-19 y) attending primary health care (PHC) or a paediatric outpatient clinic. Method: A subpopulation (n=157) from the AIM-study, was compared to a randomly selected group (n=206) attending paediatric outpatient clinics. Results: The groups had no gender differences but a dissimilar age distribution, higher mean age in PHC. Duration of disease differed, 70% had had asthma >5 years in paediatric outpatient clinics compared to half in PHC. Nearly 80% in both settings were atopics. Two-thirds in paediatric outpatient clinics had annual check up, and a known doctor, in contrast to PHC where around half were seen annually and know their doctor. In booth groups one fifth awakened due to asthma symptoms last week and a third used short acting beta-two agonist due to asthma symptoms more than twice weekly. Two-thirds used inhaled steroids. Conclusion: Paediatric outpatient clinics delivers, in accordance with guideline, care to a majority of youths with chronic asthma. PHC does not have the same check up frequency and continuity. Outcomes like medication and nightly symptoms do not differ.
