Abstract

Neurogenic thoracic tumors arise from cells derived from the embryonic neural crest and most commonly are located in costovertebral sulcus. We reviewed 60 patients with this pathology which were operated in our hospital during last 15 years. The patients included 31 females and 29 males, aged between 7 and 72 years (median age 30,2 years). Neoplasms were found to 46 (76 %) patients on plan medical investigations. 47 % patients did not have any complaints. 58 (96%) patients had radical tumor resection. 18 (30%) patients had minor postoperative complications and 1 patient died. After histologic examination there were 29 (48,3%) cases of neurofibroma, 20 (33,3%) – neurinoma and 11 (18,3%) - ganglioneuroma. Among them 12 (20%) patients had malignant tumor signs. Patients with malignant processes had tumor recurrence with spread metastasis during first year after operation and which led to death. Patients with benign tumors did well. Thus radical tumor resection is the choice method of successful treatment neurogenic thoracic tumors. Patients with malignant processes have poor prognosis.
