Abstract

During 2000, a total of 1044 pts with malignant lung tumors was treated, out of whom 21(2%) had bilateral lung cancer, 15(71%) males aged 48 years on average and 6(24%) females mean age of 61 years. The diagnosis was based on bronchologic examination in 8(38%)pts (out of whom 6 cases had direct and 2 manifested indirect tumor signs), 4(19%)pts were diagnosed by FNAB, and one patient was diagnosed by pleural biopsy, lymph gland biopsy and exploratory thoracotomy, respectively, while diagnosis could not be made in 5(24%)cases. Histopathological findings were as follows: Adenocarcinoma was found in 7(33%)pts, Squamous Cell Carcinoma in 6(28%)cases, Bronchioalveolar Carcinoma in 1(5%)case, Small Cell Lung Carcinoma in 2(10%)pts, while diagnosis could not be made in the remaining 5(10%)persons. Metastases were reported in 10(48%)pts: hepatic and pleural in 3(30%)pts, hepatic in 2(20%)cases, brain in 1(10%)case, bone in 2(20%)pts, lymph node and adrenal gland metastases in 1(10%)case, respectively. It may be concluded that bilateral bronchial cancer is most frequently verifed by bronchologic examination, and the most common histological type was Adenocarcinoma, while, on account of the advanced phase of the disease and extrathoracic metastases, the most frequent therapy was symptomatic treatment.
