Abstract

Background: The patients with HIV-infection have many affective disturbances that may influence their atitude toward smoking. This study aims to assess the level of anxiety and its influence on smoking behaviour in a group of adult patients withHIV-infection.Methods:The study included 62 smokers with HIV-infection admitted to the Clinic of Infectious Diseases, Timisoara who answered the State Trait Anxiety Inventory-X2 (S.T.A.I.-X2) anonymous test. The final scores allowed classification of patients by level of anxiety: minimal (score below 40), moderate (score 40-60) and severe (score over 60). Other variables were: sex, marital status, residence, education, number of cigarettes smoked/day, knowledge of the harmful effects of smoking, attitudes toward the therapy, etc. The data obtained was statistically processed with EpiInfo 5 program.Results:Most of the investigated patients were male (37, p=0.211). Of the study group, severe anxiety 42 patients had and 20 patients with moderate anxiety (p=0.021); 5 (25%) smokers with moderate anxiety and 35 (83.33%) with severe anxiety were recorded; 13 (65%) patients with moderate anxiety and only 6 (14.28%) patients with severe anxiety anti-smoking counseling accepted; 16 (80%) patients with moderate anxiety and only 7 (16.66%) patients with severe anxiety some grades of secondary education have; 15 (75%) patients with moderate anxiety, while only 8 (19.04%) patients with severe anxiety know the harmful effects of smoking.Conclusions: Considering that level of anxiety in patients with HIV-infection leads to an increased number of cigarettes smoked/day, required to establish a cognitive-behavioral therapy together with anti-smoking counseling in these cases.
