Abstract

Aim. To compare efficacy of inhalation steroids, leukotrien receptor antagonists and short-acting β2-agonists (administered as needed) in early treatment of asthmatics, hypersensitive to rye and wheat.
Methods. Three similar patient groups with mild persistent asthma (FEV1=96,0±]2,9) underwent three different 28-day treatment regimens: 1) leukotrien receptor antagonist - Accolate - A. (20 mg b.i.d.; N=10); 2) inhalation steroid – Beclojet - B. (250 mcg b.i.d.; N=10) and 3)β2-agonists on as needed basis - P. Symptom evaluation (MRC score), methacholine and allergen challenge tests, total IgE test and conventional spirometry were performed in all patients groups.
Results. There was a significant decrease of the number of asthmatic attacks in B.-treated patients (p<0.01; table 1). It has been also observed PC20 decrease during methacholine challenge test in patients received antiinflammatory therapy by B. Total IgE and hyperresponsiveness to specific allergen challenge tests did not changed significantly after the treatment in all three groups (p>0.05).
Table 1. Influence of different treatment on parameters of mild asthmatics (M±]SD).

Conclusion.
We suggest, that early administration of inhalation steroids in mild asthmatics with hypersensitivity to rye and wheat is the most effective treatment regimen in terms of symptomatology and antiinflammatory action.
