Abstract

Background: The management of asthma is insufficient and new tools are required to enhance treatment practice and compliance (1). 75% of Danish families have access to the Internet from their homes and the media may provide new possibilities in the management of asthma.
Methods: An electronically asthma diary combined with a self-management tool based on registrations of symptoms and peak-flow have been established for patients on www.linkmedica.dk. The patient diary can be viewed and monitored on a PC by the GP or from the out-clinic. A series of programs have been incorporated to assist the clinician in estimating asthma control according to official guidelines (2).
Results: 25.000 patients are registered as users and 200 GP's does regular use the tool for surveillance and management of patients. Results from an on-going study (n=800) using www.linkmedica.dk as an electronical case-report form have shown very high adherence with electronic monitoring (86%). A randomized study, including 300 patients comparing treatment either in primary care, by asthma specialists or by the use of Internet tools, have been established using inflammatory markers and QOL-questionnaires as primary variables. Results from the 6-month study period will be presented.
