Abstract
In a General Practice located outside Copenhagen we have taken a thorough review on the treatment of asthma. We have 86 patients with the diagnose chronic asthma. This is 5,7 % of total number of patients age 5 or more. They are all seen in the clinic at regular intervals. We have initiated an asthma education by the nurse and the doctor. The patient are given fixed peakflow values where to either increase or decrease their dose of inhaled corticosteroid.
We have one year of follow up on 39 patients and three years follow up on 36 patients. We registrated the number of hospitalizations and the number of systemic steroid treatments. Throughout the three years of observation the lungfunctions in percent of predicted (ECCS) remained constant.

The number of attendances at the clinic is significantly reduced during the three years of observation. In the same period we observed an insignificant reduction in the numbers of hospitalizations and in the number of systemic steroid treatments. We conclude that our use of an asthma-selfcare plan is safe.
