Abstract

To evaluate the course of asthma during pregnancy, this study was performed on 44 pregnant asthmatic patients.
Amongst 44 cases, the age range was between 15 to 40 years with a mean of 28.3±]5.9. Gravidity was between 1 to 6, with a mean value of 2.4±]1.4.
Pulmonary function test (PFT) was performed in three phases, phase one: before pregnancy, phase two: during pregnancy, phase three: after labor.
The results for the first phase showed 52.3% mild asthma, 38.6% moderate asthma and 9.1% sever asthma. For the second phase PFT results showed 40.9% mild, 36.8% moderate and 15.9% sever and in the third phase, 56.8% mild, 22.7% moderate, 15.9% sever asthma and 4.5% had normal PFT results. Evaluation of outcome of pregnancy showed 93.2% healthy normal newborns, 2.3% prematurity and in 4.5% of cases abortion was occurred.
Comparison of PFT results, before and during pregnancy revealed 22.7% improvement in asthma, 36.4% exacerbation of asthma however 40.9% had no changes in their disease severity. In addition, comparing PFT results, during pregnancy with those after delivery, 18.1% of cases were some what ameliorated, 15.9% were exacerbated and 65.9% showed no changes.
A statistically significant correlation was detected between age over 30 years and exacerbation of asthma during pregnancy and after delivery (p=0.058, p=0.024) respectively. There was also a significant correlation between higher gravidity (>=3) and improvement of asthma symptoms after delivery (p=0.031) while such significant relation was not detected, during-pregnancy (p=0.274).
