Abstract

The aim of the study was to evaluate the bone mineral density in patients with bronchial asthma (BA) treated with different regimes of glucocorticosteroids, inhaled (iGCSs) and oral (oGCSs).
Overall 167 patients with BA were recruited and divided into following therapeutic groups: 1.12 patients never received GCSs; 2.iGCSs: 126 asthmatics treated with iGCSs (2a/. low doses - up to 400 mcg/day beclomethasone dipropionate (BDP) and up to 5 shirt courses of oGCSs administered due to exacerbation of BA – 43 patients; 2b/. middle doses - up to 1000 mcg/day BDP and less than 10 courses of oGCSs - 49 patients; 2c/. high doses - more than 1000 mcg/day BDP and more than 10 courses of orGCSs – 34 patients; 3.29 patients received oGCSs as regular therapy.Measurements of bone density - lumbar vertebrae, neck, Ward and trochanter – via DEXA (Lunar+) were carried out on the day of enrolment.
Results: showed below.
We received strong correlation (r=0,68) with statistically significance (ss)(p<0,0001) between dose of GCSs and bone density. It was not obtained correlation and ss between duration of disease and bone mineral density in any group; as soon as in group 3 was showed not strong correlation (r=0,61) and ss (p=0,01) between age of patient and bone density. Significant differences were not revealed between group 1 and group 2a only, in coupled comparing. Other groups differed by chi2-test significantly.
