Abstract

Aim: The purpose of the present research is studying the influence of glucocorticoids on a level of sex hormones in menopausal women with bronchial asthma.
Methods: 18 patients aged from 47 to 51 years, with asthma duration from 5 up to 37 years, were assessed. Patients were divided into 2 subgroups depending on a kind of glucocorticoids therapy. The first subgroup: 6 women who took oral glucocorticoid, prednisolone in doses 5-25 mg/daily, during two years and more. The second subgroup: 12 women, who took inhaled glucocorticoid, beclomethasone dipropionate in doses 1000-1500 micrograms/day during period from one to three years. Control group: 6 non-asthmatic women, aged from 48 to 50 years. Patients? sex hormonal status was determined by levels of estradiole, progesterone and testosterone in blood, using radio-immune method.
Results: According to data received, in the first group of patients authentic decrease in a level of estradiole (0,15 ±] 0,04 nmol/l) is discovered in comparison both with patients of control group (0,5 ±] 0,05 nmol/l), p < 0,001, and with patients of the second group (0,47 ±] 0,05 nmol/l). There was not authentic difference in estradiole between patients of the second and control groups. We did not discover a significant difference in testosterone and progesterone in all groups of patients.
Conclusion: The using of oral glucocorticoids has more expressed negative influence on a level of sex hormones in comparison with inhaled glucocorticoids. The data received by us indicate the need for correction of sex hormones in menopausal women with bronchial asthma taking oral glucocorticoids.
