Abstract

Introduction: gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) is a trigger of asthma and various chest diseases. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of GERD, determined by clinical evaluation, 24 h esophageal pH monitoring and esophagogastroscopy, in patients with intrinsic bronchial asthma.
Methods: 36 patients (22 males, 14 females, mean 36,4 +/- 6,8 years) with moderate and severe persistent intrinsic asthma, according to the GINA criteria were studied. 24 ambulatory pH testing and esophagogastroscopy were executed and these data analysed by the De Meester score.
Results: 21 patients (58%) had an abnormal 24h-esophageal pH monitoring. 16 patients (44%) had rephux symptoms. 9 patients (25%) had hiatal hernia. Clinical data and the pH testing were consonant in 14 patients (39%).
Conclusions: these data suggest that GERD can easily cause asthma onset. Medical therapy of GERD can also improve the asthma symptoms.
