Abstract

In order to estimate the degree of airway responsiveness in subjects who complained only on chronic dry cough, we have analyzed 46 subjects (mean age 35.8 yrs) with dry cough for more than 6 months (group A) and 30 asthmatics (mean age 27.4 yrs) with typical asthma symptoms (group B). All patients had normal baseline spirometric values. Bronchial provocation tests were performed by the Asthma Provocation System and plmonary funcion tests measured by body pletismography after inhalation of saline and each increasing dose of histamine. PDSGaw40 was calculated from individual dose response curve by linear interpolation and the slope of each dose-response curve (DRS1) as the percent decline in SGaw from post saline value after the final cumulative dose administered divided by log final cumulative dose.
The difference in bronchial sensitivity and bronchial reactivity between the observed groups are summarized in table 1.

It can be concluded that although chronic cough can be a sole manifestation of asthma, bronchial responsiveness in these patients is of a milder degree than in patients with typical asthma symptoms.
