Abstract The aim of this study is to correlate broncho-hyper-responsinveness (BHR) with the clinical symptoms, during the therapy of asthma. 70 patients (34 men) in age range 21-55 years were recruited, suffering from: a) a mild seasonal allergic asthma (17/70), b) a mild perennial allergic one (34/70) and c) a non-allergic mild asthma (19/70). All of them underwent inhalation of methacoline at baseline and a cholinergic BHR was calculated with PD20-FEV1, after a symptom free period of two years. 14 pts in group a) and 28 pts in group b) were treated with inhaled B2-agonists, beclomethasone, disodiumcromoglycate and immunotherapy, 19 pts of group c) underwent the same treatment without immunotherapy; all the other were not treated. Although the clinical picture improved with a continuative therapy, BHR persisted throughout the time. No correlation between the values of PD20-FEV1 and the clinical picture was found. BHR seems to be due multiple interactive factors worth investigating.
