Abstract

BACKGROUND:
Current treatment guidelines define inhaled corticosteroids as the cornerstone of antiinflammatory therapy for asthma.
AIM:
Our objective was to assess the correlation between bronchoconstrictor and bronchodilator responsiveness and bronchial inflammation in asthma.
MATERIALS AND METHODS:
54 asthmatic patients (aged 18 to 38) with no history of corticosteroid treatment, neither inhaled nor systemic, were recruited into this study. Antiinflammatory treatment for our patients consisted in inhaled corticosteroids, in doses corresponding to each own respective severity stage, according to GHINA criteria. Mitigation of bronchial inflammation was certified subjectively through a symptoms-questionary revealing significant clinical improvement, and objectively through normalization of basal ventilatory volumes and flow parameters, as well as that of blood and BAL fluid eosinophils count. At the same time we observed that bronchoconstrictor and bronchodilator tests became negative.
CONCLUSION:
A significant decrease in the bronchomotor responsiveness in successfully treated asthmatic patients might prove to be a good predictor of diminishing airway inflammation.
