Abstract

The aim of our study was to assess HRQoL of older patients with diagnosed asthma.
Method: A total of 78 asthmatic patients (42 male and 36 female), mean age 69,8 ±] 7,2 years, and 50 control subjects were enrolled in our study.
HRQoL (assessed by SGRQ), lung function, bronchodilator response to salbutamol and level of dyspnea (assessed by modified Borg scale) were measured at the beginning and end of study.
Results: Compared to control asthmatic group of patients showed significant bronchodilator response to inhaled salbutamol (FEV1, pre-salbutamol 1,32 ±] 0,67 L, post-salbutamol 1,78 ±] 0,85 L, p<0,01).
Subjects in asthmatic group had higher scores for all domains of SGRQ (symptoms, activity, impact and total) than subjects in control group.
Level of dyspnea was more sever among asthmatic group than control (8,23 ±] 1,32 to 4,56 ±] 1,14, p<0,01)
Conclusion: Older patients with diagnosed asthma have much impaired quality of life, which determinates poorer psychosocial status.
