Abstract

Background : The socioeconomic problems in Brazil are important and the asthmatics have difficulties in assessing health provides as well as they did not have insurance for medicine Aim: To estimate direct and indirect costs with asthma attendance to help a better expenditure in asthma treatment. Design: A survey applied in asthmatic at emergency attendance Methods. A questionnaire was applied to obtain: symptoms score, medication intake, n[degree] ER visits and hospitalization as well as lost of work or school days and premature retirement because asthma over last 6 months. Results44 patients classified by GINA as mild= 17 (39%), moderate = 19(43%) and severe = 8(18%), and average months income US$ 380,20. Only 22,7% used daily inhaled anti-inflammatory medication. The following table demonstrates the mean costs/patients in USS stratified according to severity asthma

The impact of the cost of medication in monthly income were, 0,34% , 5,4% and 10% to mild ,moderate and severe asthma respectively .Conclusions: The medicines represent the main cost for the patients and could reduce the complience with the treatment.
