Abstract

To determine trends in tuberculosis case fatality in England and Wales according to age and disease site, we analysed published data on notifications and deaths from tuberculosis from 1988 to 2000 (table). Case fatality for tuberculosis of all sites and age groups combined has fallen over this period; this trend is most marked for respiratory disease, and in the 35-74 age-group. Falling case-fatality rates may reflect improvements in case-management. They might also be explained by the decreasing proportion of patients in older age-groups and with respiratory and central nervous system tuberculosis, who experience higher case-fatality rates than younger patients with disease elsewhere.
