Abstract

The incidence of tuberculosis in Bucharest (a town with >2 million inhabitants) recorded the most decreasing point - 65.9%ooo in 1985, increasing progressively after this period and attaining 154.7%ooo in 2001 (an increase of 134.7%).
The incidence was situated at values between 118.3%ooo in the 1st Sector and 202.0%ooo in the 5th Sector. A series of social-economical and ethnical factors determined in the last sector an important differentiation as compared with the rest of the territory of the town. The incidence of tuberculosis was 165.6%ooo in males and 99.6%ooo in women. The pulmonary site was found in 84.7%. The highest risk of getting the disease can be found in the young adults of 25-29 years old (181.9%ooo). The periodic prevalence of the patients with bacilli increased from 78.8%ooo in 1988 to 134.7%ooo in 1995, after that a decrease occurred, up to 105.5%ooo in 2001. In this epidemiological context, the incidence of tuberculosis in children increased in the last 6 years from 22.9%ooo in 1996 to 60.8%ooo in 2001.
Due to the supported efforts necessary to apply the DOTS strategy, the success rate of the treatment administered to the patients improved progressively, being 83% as compared with 76.0% in 1997.
