Abstract

Background: One of the scenario of finding tuberculosis in children is the contact with an adult tuberculosis patient examination. To stop the transmission of infection in the community no less significant is an opposite scenario - active infectious source case tracing in tuberculosis patient.
Aim: To analyse the epidemiological and clinical significance of adult tuberculosis cases found through pediatric tuberculosis patients.
Method: Data of discovered source of the infection in pediatric tuberculosis patients were analysed from 1999 to 2001.
Results: From 1999 to 2001 there were 435 pediatric tuberculosis cases identified in Latvia. 215 ( 49,4% ) of them were diagnosed examining as contact person with an adult tuberculosis patient, 134 ( 30.8% ) were checked due to infectious allergy to PPD, 86 ( 19,8% ) children were evaluated because of symptoms consistent with tuberculosis. Looking for tuberculosis source in those 220 children found with PPD test and clinically, 26 adult tuberculosis patients were identified who had had infected 29 children. 19 ( 73,1% )adults were smear and/or culture positive. 18 ( 69% ) of them were asymptomatic at the time of diagnosing.
Conclusions: Thoroughly active source case finding is necessary for both - to stop the transmission of infection in the community and to improve the treatment outcomes in adult tuberculosis patients.
