Abstract

Introduction: Acute bronchiolitis is the most common lower respiratory tract infection in the first year of life. Systematic review of the literature would suggest that pharmaceutical agents do not influence the course of the disease.
Methods: We surveyed all Swiss paediatricians regarding their current management of acute bronchiolitis in year 2001.
Results: From a total of 937 questionnaires 541 (58%) were returned. 422 (78%) responders treat children with acute bronchiolitis:

Outpatients (n=408) always sometimes only high risk never not answered

Conclusions: A wide variation in the treatment of bronchiolitis was noted. Most Swiss paediatricians use supplementary drugs. In particular, bronchodilators and steroids are used very often. National guidelines based on clinical evidence could be helpful for a standardised management of acute bronchiolitis.
