Abstract
Peripheral polynuropathy can be complication of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and the real incidence in literature is with variation between 7-80%.
In this aim we studied 30 patients with COPD,looking for the prevalence of peripheral polyneuropathy among them.Six patients were women and 24 men.The medianage was 67.15 years(50-80 years). All of the patients have stoped smoking and were studied in stable condition,at least 3 weeks after acute episodes. The respiratory inclusion criterias were:FEV1<70%,FEV1/FVC,70%,hypoxaemia(PaO2<70%).Clinical peripheral polynuropathy was defined in the physical examinations.Possible Cwas diagnosed by alteration in the conduction velocity in the neurophysiologic study.
Patients with another known risk for peripheral polynuropathy were excluded.
We concluded that:
1.Clinical peripheral polynuropathy was present in 15% of the patients.
2.Possible peripheral polynuropathy was present in 35% of the patients.
3.There was a positive correlation between the diagnosis of peripheral polynuropathy and low body weight,in patients with COPD.
