Abstract

The study was designed to determine the nutritional status of stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients by anthropometric, bioelectrical impedance analysis and biochemical parameters and the impact of nutrition on pulmonary functional parameters, diffusion capacity and dyspnea.
Forty stable COPD patients (20 emphysema, 20 chronic bronchitis) and 30 healthy individuals as a control group were included in the study. Other causes of malnutrition were excluded. FEV1, FEV1/FVC, diffusion capacity, arterial blood analysis were performed and dyspnea score was determined.
Anthropometric measurements (weight, height, body mass index, triceps skin fold thickness (TST), mid-arm circumference, mid-arm muscle area, and bioelectrical impedance (fat free mass-FFM and fat mass-FM) were performed to assess the nutritional status. Albumin, prealbumin, transferrine, retinol binding protein levels were also measured.
All the biochemical parameters, triceps skin thickness, mid-arm muscle circumference were significantly low in the emphysema group (p<0.05). FFM measurements of all the COPD patients were lower than that of the control group (p<0.001). No correlation between body mass index and dyspnea score was detected in the COPD group (p>0.05). But there was a significant positive correlation between body mass index and FEV1/FVC (r:0.882, p<0.05).
In conclusion, body mass index was low in the COPD patients and it was detected especially in the emphysema group that weight loss effected the pulmonary functions negatively.
