Abstract

Aims: To analyse some aspects of tuberculosis (TB) in patients in Martin region.
Methods: Retrospective study of TB patients who were diagnosed and treated in the period 1995-1999
Results: Patients database consists of 106 persons who were treated in hospital 114 times (106/114), males 66-71 times, females 40-43times. Majority of patients suffering from pulmonary TB: 96% (extrapulmonary TB: 7.9 %). 45.6 % were old-age pensioner and 9.6 % of unemployed. The diagnosis of pulmonary TB was confirmed by positive bacteriologic or histological examination in 55.2% of patients (A15). 95.6% of patients have following clinical symptoms: cough (85.7%), sweating (53.5%), dyspnoea (47.6%), subfebrile temperature (35%), febricity (31.6%), weight loss (27%), haemoptysis (6.6%), others (48.2%), without symptoms (4.3%). It was very surprising the symptoms take time more than 4 months in 22% of patient to the time of admission to hospital. The authors analysed the diagnostic problems of pulmonary and extra-pulmonary TB, X-ray findings, additional diseases and treatment of TB.
Conclusion: Retrospective analysis of the patients at the end of the second millennium showed that in spite of decreasing incidence of TB in the Slovak republic, TB exceeded the threshold into the third millennium.
