Abstract
The aim of the study was to evaluate the associated diseases in chronic tuberculosis (TB) patients, assuming that there is an increased frequency of these.
This case-control study included 164 patients hospitalized in a period of 1 year that were separated in 2 groups: chronic and non-chronic patients. The relative frequencies of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), chronic hepatic, gastric and neurological-psychiatric disorders, the relative risk (RR) and attributable risk (RA) were calculated.
COPD and gastric disorders had a RR>1, RA>0, while hepatic and neurological-psychiatric disorders had a RR>1 and RA<0. From alcohol abusers subgroup (106 patients), 27% of chronic patients had hepatic disorders, 29% gastric disorders and 32 % neurological and psychiatric disorders, that was almost the same for the non chronic patients.
There was a positive association between COPD, gastric disorders and chronic TB, while for hepatic and neurological-psychiatric disorders no significant association was found. Except gastric disorders that were positive associated with chronic TB there is no increase as expected in frequency of associated diseases nor in chronic or non-chronic alcohol abusers patients.
