Abstract

We investigated the oxidative stress induced by tuberculostatic continuous treatment in 23 patients and 10 normal persons as controls by spectrophotometrical determinations of superoxid dismutase (SOD) and gluthation (GSH) levels in heparinised blood and urine. The tests were performed in basal condition and after 2 and 4 weeks of treatment.
The plasma SOD values determinated in basal condition were significantly increased than in controls (p<0.05), than after 2 weeks (p=0.03) of treatment and insignificantly increased (p=0.5) than after 4 weeks. Urine SOD values in basal condition were increased (p=0.003) than in controls. Urine SOD values determinated after 2 weeks (p=0.01) and 4 weeks of treatment were significantly decreased than in basal condition. Plasma GSH values in patients, in basal condition, were decreased (p<0.0001) than in controls. After 2 weeks of treatment, plasma GSH values were increased (p<0.0001) than in basal condition and after 4 weeks retourn at about basal values. Urine GSH values in basal condition were decreased than in controls (p<0.0001), significantly increased after 2 weeks of treatment than in basal condition and insignificantly decreased at 4 weeks.
The values of SOD and GSH in patients showed un increased oxidative stress due by inflammatory processes. After 2 weeks of treatment the values indicated transient tissue injuries, and after 4 weeks, the decreased values indicated the setting up of adaptation processes.
