Abstract Introduction One of the goals of a rehabilitation program for patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is to increase muscle mass. Mostly this muscle mass is estimated by measuring bio-impedance of the whole body, however little is known about the intra-subject variability.Aim To assess the intra-subject variability of the bio-impedance measurement in healthy subjects and COPD patients.Subjects 18 Healthy subjects (4 male/14 female, mean age 38 yrs, mean BMI 24 kg/m²) and 18 COPD patients (12 male/6 female, mean age 64 yrs, mean BMI 28 kg/m² ).Method Bio-impedance measurements were performed twice, with an exact 24 hour interval, using the Bodystat® 1500 (Bodystat, England). Oral intake was not allowed in the 2 hours preceding the measurement. Results
Mean (SD) difference in healthy and COPD subjects: -11 (28) Ohm (p = 0.24), and 14 (27) Ohm (p = 0.06) respectively. Conclusion No significant differences between two measurements within 24 hours were found, neither in healthy subjects, nor in COPD-patients. However, intra-subject variability was high in both groups.
