Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Malnutrition is observed frequently in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis. However their micronutrient status is still poorly documented. we investigated the serum zinc level during anti tuberculosis therapy to detect the role of zinc in promoting immune system.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the plasma zinc level in children with active pulmonary tuberculosis and evaluate the zinc status during the anti tuberculosis therapy at National Research Institute of Tuberculosis and lung diseases (NRITLD) which is a referral centre in Tehran.
METHOD: we evaluated 45 children aged from 2 to 12 years who admitted at NRlTLD. We divided them in three groups: Active tuberculosis, Malnourished and Healthy. The plasma zinc level of 15 children with tuberculosis was studied and compared with two other groups. In addition the serum zinc level of patients under anti tuberculosis therapy was again determined after first and 4th month.
RESULT: The mean plasma zinc concentration in children with pulmonary tuberculosis (n=15) was lower than those without tuberculosis including malnourished or healthy. Further more the serum zinc level during anti tuberculosis therapy was declined and then inclined and reached the normal level in 4th month after treatment.
CONCLUSION: plasma zinc status can be a good marker for monitoring the severity of the disease and the response to therapy in tuberculosis. However more studies should be done to analyse the precise changes of serum zinc during anti tuberculosis therapy.
