Abstract
Reports have shown that dietary intake of antioxidant micronutrients is associated with the improvement of lung function in both children and adults. We have examined the relationship between dietary intake of antioxidants and lung function in adult subjects.Samples of 415 non smokers adults ,age 30-60, were taken from two areas, urban and rural.Spirometry was assessed with ATS guidelines.A 24-hour recall data dietary intake of specific nutrients was determined. After adjustment for age and height,it was found that increasing tertiles of dietary intake of vitamin E was positive correlated with FEV
1
(β= 69 ml / tertile,p<0.03) and FEV
1
/FVC %(β=0.8 % / tertile, p<0.03) in non-smoking women (n=235), vs FEV
1
(β= 72 ml / tertile, p< 0.03) and FEV
1
/ FVC % (β = 1.8 % / tertile, p< 0.03) in non-smoking men (n= 180). The results show that by increasing dietary consumption with vit. E lung function will be improved in non-smoking adults.
