Abstract

Aim: To investigate the outcome of using an Internet-based asthma management tool and to assess whether the outcome differs from that of asthma monitoring and treatment in an outpatient respiratory clinic or in primary care.
Methods: Three hundred asthmatics were randomised to three parallel groups in a six-month prospective study: 1. Internet-based monitoring (n = 100); 2. Specialist monitoring (n = 100); and 3. General practitioner (GP) monitoring (n = 100).
Results: Internet-based asthma management lead to significantly better asthma control than in the other two groups, regarding; symptoms [Internet versus specialist (P=0.002) and versus GP (P<0.001)], quality of life [Internet versus specialist P=0.03) and versus GP (P=0.04)], lung function [Internet versus specialist (P=0.002) and versus GP (P<0.001)], and airway responsiveness [Internet versus GP (P=0.02)].
Conclusion: Internet-based management can improve asthma control over a six-month period compared to conventional management.
