The clinical practice of skeletal muscle testing and training in patients with COPD

Aims: At the conclusion of the proposed lunchtime session, the participant will be able to:
- learn and understand the role of physical inactivity in the development of skeletal muscle dysfunction in COPD;
- understand different methods to assess skeletal muscle dysfunction in patients with COPD;
- appreciate the effects of various exercise training modalities that specifically target the skeletal muscles of patients with COPD: one-legged cycling, high-intensity resistance training and NMES;
- describe the effects of the abovementioned exercise modalities on skeletal muscle function, exercise capacity and health status in patients with COPD.
