Aims: Description of advantages, disadvantages, indications and contraindications of the early use of noninvasive ventilation in the ward to avoid further clinical deterioration and need for ICU admission. Identification of the patients who are likely to benefit from early NIV in the ward and those who might be harmed. Information on the quality of NIV delivery in the ward. What set-up is needed to apply NIV in the ward for patients with acute respiratory failure will also be covered.
