Aims: This is the second course in a three-year postgraduate core curriculum covering the main issues in COPD. This second module in the series focuses on the clinical issues, including disease staging, systemic involvement and health status assessment, and pharmacological and nonpharmacological options for therapy. The specific aims of the module are:
• to review and discuss problems related to diagnosis and clinical assessment and staging;
• to understand advancements in knowledge about systemic involvement in COPD;
• to understand the impact of the disease on health status and its psychological consequences;
• to review pharmacological treatment options for COPD and to provide an update on possible future trends;
• to discuss nonpharmacological approaches to the treatment of COPD.
