Aims: The present symposium reviews the outcomes of a recent inter-society workshop involving representatives of the ERS, American Thoracic Society, American College of Chest Physicians and American Academy of Sleep Medicine. The symposium will compare limited and full polysomnographic sleep studies, review technological requirements for the optimum portable monitor, and also propose research priorities necessary to formally evaluate portable monitors? performance in the ambulatory clinical setting.
