Aims: to describe recent advances in pharmacotherapy for patients with sleep disordered breathing; to explain the impact of the identification of different pathophysiological traits, including upper airway muscle function, respiratory control, arousal from sleep and upper airway anatomy, on the choice of pharmacological drug classes; to describe novel possibilities and tools for identifying these different traits based on polysomnography.
