Tracheostomy management and upper airway assessment in the weaning patient

Skills lab
Chairs: A. Sajnic (Zagreb, Croatia), P. Antoine-Pitterson (United Kingdom)
Aims: This session will present the indications when a tracheostomy may be needed and the challenges in weaning (distinguish the need for using a tracheostomy for Mechanical Ventilation versus for Airway Clearance). To show the role of airway clearance techniques to optimise weaning and tracheostomy decannulation. To understand the role of instrumental analysis in upper airway assessment and laryngeal weaning as well as communication strategies to aid tracheostomy weaning. To discuss the nursing care for patients with tracheostomy as well as the role of non-invasive ventilation to assist weaning and decannulation. To present the care of a tracheostomy through slides, practical videos from the clinic, links to web resources, skills, material, education (expert nurse).
